Sales Tax Calculator: All 50 States and DC
Pick a state and the calculator loads its rate, its grocery rule, and its delivery rule. Below, every jurisdiction in one table — sorted, comparable, and honest about which figures are averages rather than answers.
Rates as of 1 July 2026 · checked 20 August 2026What this calculator gets right that most do not
Three things decide the answer beyond the headline rate, and they are the three most calculators skip.
Groceries are not one rule. Most states exempt unprepared food from the state rate. A minority — Georgia, North Carolina, Louisiana, Arizona, Colorado, South Carolina — exempt it at state level and still let local taxes apply, so a food shop is not tax free there. Utah and Virginia charge a flat statewide grocery rate with no local addition. Hawaii, Idaho, and South Dakota tax food at the full rate. Select groceries above and the calculator applies whichever of those applies.
Delivery charges follow the state, not intuition. Some states tax shipping on taxable goods whatever the invoice says. Others exempt it when it is separately stated and the buyer could have collected the goods themselves. For most states the position is genuinely unsettled in published guidance, and this tool says so rather than guessing.
Prepared food is a different category. A rotisserie chicken and a raw chicken are taxed differently in the same shop.
Every jurisdiction, compared
Combined rate is the state rate plus the population-weighted average of local rates. Alaska has no state tax but local jurisdictions levy their own; New Jersey's local average is negative because of Urban Enterprise Zones, so its combined rate sits below its state rate.

Four states have a full write-up rather than a row: Georgia, Louisiana, Colorado, and Arizona — chosen because each is complicated in a different way.
Where these numbers cannot help you
- They are averages. Your actual rate depends on your address, sometimes down to which side of a street you are on. Use the state's own lookup for anything that goes on a return.
- Product taxability varies. Clothing, digital goods, software, and services are treated differently across states, and this calculator only distinguishes general goods, unprepared food, and prepared food.
- Sourcing rules decide whose rate applies. Most states tax at the buyer's location; some use the seller's for in-state sales. That question comes before the rate does.
